Web3 Explained: What It Is and What It Isn't

Beyond the marketing: what 'Web3' actually refers to, what it has delivered, and what remains aspirational.

Few terms in the recent technology vocabulary have been more contested than "Web3." For some, it is the next major evolution of the internet — a rebuilt network where users own their data, identities, and digital assets through cryptographic primitives. For others, it is empty marketing dressed up around technologies that have been around for years.

The truth, as usual, is in between.

The origin of the term

"Web3" was popularized around 2014 by Gavin Wood, one of the co-founders of Ethereum. The framing situated it in a sequence: Web 1.0 (1990s) was the read-only web of static pages; Web 2.0 (2000s onward) was the read-write web of user-generated content (and aggregation of users on a small number of platforms); Web3 is the proposed read-write-own web where users control their data, identity, and digital assets through cryptographic primitives.

The technologies underneath

What people actually mean by "Web3" varies, but typically draws from public blockchains (Ethereum and others), self-custody wallets (software or hardware that holds users' private keys), cryptographic identity (addresses and signatures that allow authentication without per-application accounts), token standards (ERC-20, ERC-721, ERC-1155), decentralized storage (IPFS, Arweave, Filecoin), decentralized name systems (ENS), and decentralized finance.

None of these technologies is new. What is increasingly possible is composing them into applications that genuinely operate without centralized backends.

What has been delivered

Self-custody as a real option. For users who choose it, self-custody of digital assets and identity is now practical reality. Wallets like MetaMask, Rabby, Phantom, and Rainbow let users interact with thousands of applications without ever creating a traditional account.

Decentralized financial infrastructure. DeFi is the clearest case where Web3 technology has produced a working alternative to centralized incumbents. Decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, stablecoin issuers, and yield products now handle hundreds of billions of dollars in flow.

Verifiable digital ownership. Despite the speculative excesses of the NFT boom, the underlying capability — to provably own a unique digital item without trusting a platform — is genuinely new and useful.

Permissionless application development. Anyone with a few hundred dollars and an internet connection can deploy a smart contract to a global network and have it accessible to anyone in the world.

What remains aspirational

"Owning your data." The dominant Web2 platforms still operate as before, and most "Web3 social" applications either remain small or are themselves running on centralized servers with token-based incentives bolted on.

User experience. Web3 user experience remains substantially worse than Web2 alternatives for most consumer use cases. Wallet management, gas fees, transaction signing, and seed phrase backup all impose cognitive load.

Scalability for consumer apps. Even with Layer 2 networks reducing fees dramatically, consumer-scale applications (millions of daily users) remain hard to build natively on-chain.

Decentralization itself. Many "Web3" services in practice depend on centralized intermediaries: RPC providers, indexers, frontend hosting, custodians.

The bottom line

Web3 is partly a real technological development, partly a marketing umbrella, and partly a vision that is still mostly aspirational. The parts that are real — self-custody, decentralized finance, verifiable digital ownership — have produced genuine new capabilities that are now in routine use by millions of people. The parts that are aspirational remain mostly works in progress.

The right disposition is neither breathless enthusiasm nor dismissive skepticism. Web3 is a slow, uneven, occasionally embarrassing, occasionally remarkable evolution of internet infrastructure.
