Bitcoin vs Ethereum: Which Should You Buy?
The two largest cryptocurrencies serve different purposes, have different risk profiles, and attract different kinds of investors. Here is how to think about the choice.
If you are buying cryptocurrency for the first time, Bitcoin and Ethereum together represent more than half of the entire market. The choice between them — or the choice to hold both — is one of the most important decisions in any crypto portfolio.
This piece walks through how Bitcoin and Ethereum actually differ, where each one's strengths lie, and which one fits which kind of investor. The short version: most serious holders end up with some of each.
The fundamental difference in one sentence
Bitcoin is designed to be money. Ethereum is designed to be a computer.
That single distinction explains most of what follows. Bitcoin's design choices — fixed supply, conservative protocol changes, simple scripting, energy-intensive consensus — are all in service of being a robust, neutral, censorship-resistant store of value. Ethereum's design choices — programmable smart contracts, flexible monetary policy, faster iteration, proof-of-stake consensus — are in service of being a general-purpose application platform.
Supply economics
Bitcoin has a maximum supply of 21 million coins. New issuance halves every four years and will round to zero around the year 2140. This monetary policy has never been changed and would be enormously difficult to change. The scarcity is the central feature.
Ethereum has no fixed supply cap. New ether is issued to validators as a network reward. Since the 2021 EIP-1559 upgrade, a portion of every transaction fee is permanently destroyed. When network activity is high, more ether is burned than issued — making the supply deflationary on net. When activity is low, it is mildly inflationary.
The implications: Bitcoin's case as digital sound money is structural. Ethereum's case as productive infrastructure means its supply behavior is tied to usage, which is a more dynamic and less predictable property.
What each one is used for in practice
Bitcoin is primarily held. The dominant use case is "save in it." Active payments happen on a much smaller scale (Lightning Network, retail acceptance in some regions), but the bulk of Bitcoin sits in wallets as a long-term asset.
Ethereum is primarily used. Stablecoins worth hundreds of billions of dollars settle on Ethereum every month. DeFi protocols process billions in trades and lending. NFTs, on-chain identity, and increasingly tokenized real-world assets all flow through Ethereum's infrastructure.
This is reflected in the metrics. Bitcoin's transaction count is modest; its "holdings concentration in long-term wallets" is enormous. Ethereum's activity is much higher; its "long-term holding" cohort is meaningful but smaller relative to active use.
Volatility and behavior
Both are volatile compared to traditional assets. Within crypto, Bitcoin tends to be slightly less volatile than Ethereum, especially during sell-offs — though both can lose 70% or more in major drawdowns. Bitcoin and Ethereum prices are highly correlated, but Ethereum tends to amplify Bitcoin's moves: more upside in bull markets, more downside in bear markets.
For investors, this means an Ethereum allocation is a higher-beta version of the crypto trade in general. Many portfolios hold both with a higher weighting in Bitcoin (to reflect the lower volatility and longer track record) and a smaller Ethereum allocation (to capture the additional upside and exposure to the smart-contract economy).
Security models
Both networks have operated continuously without core protocol failures — Bitcoin since 2009, Ethereum since 2015. Both have strong cryptographic foundations and large, distributed validator/miner networks.
The differences are subtle but real. Bitcoin's Proof of Work uses external resources (electricity) for security and has 15+ years of adversarial testing. Ethereum's Proof of Stake (since 2022) uses internal resources (staked capital) and has a shorter track record under PoS specifically, though the upgrade itself was executed cleanly.
Bitcoin's smart-contract surface is intentionally small, which limits the attack surface and reduces the rate of exploits. Ethereum's smart-contract surface is enormous; while the base layer is robust, applications built on top of it have produced billions in losses through smart contract bugs over the years.
Regulatory standing
Bitcoin's classification is the most settled in major jurisdictions. The US SEC, CFTC, and most other regulators treat it as a commodity rather than a security. Spot Bitcoin ETFs were approved in the US in January 2024 and are available through every major brokerage. Most banks and asset managers have institutional Bitcoin offerings.
Ethereum's regulatory standing has been more contested but is mostly settled in practice. Spot Ether ETFs were approved in the US in 2024. The SEC has signaled (without ever formally confirming) that ETH is not treated as a security in most contexts. Specific Ethereum-related products — staking services, certain tokenized offerings — remain in regulatory gray zones in some jurisdictions.

- More active development and faster ecosystem evolution.
- Best fit for users who want to participate in the application layer, not just hold an asset.
The case against each

- Energy use is a real concern and a target for criticism.
- Slower base-layer transaction throughput.
- The valuation depends almost entirely on the store-of-value thesis being correct.
The case against Ethereum
- More complex supply economics and tokenomics — harder to model.
- Greater smart-contract risk in the surrounding ecosystem.
- Competition from alternative smart-contract platforms (Solana, others) is real.
- Validator concentration in liquid staking and centralized exchanges raises decentralization questions.
- Higher volatility creates a larger psychological hurdle during drawdowns.
What most serious holders actually do
Most experienced crypto holders allocate to both rather than choosing between them. A common starting ratio is roughly 60-70% Bitcoin and 30-40% Ethereum for a "core" crypto allocation, sometimes with small additional positions in specific other assets.
The reasoning: Bitcoin and Ethereum represent the two most-distinct, longest-tested theses in the space. Owning both provides exposure to both store-of-value monetization and on-chain economy growth, with the larger Bitcoin weighting reflecting its lower volatility and more established status.
The bottom line
"Which should you buy" is the wrong question for most people. "How should you split between them" is the right one. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum have produced compelling long-term returns through multiple cycles. The choice between them depends on what you actually want exposure to — sound money, or the broader on-chain economy — and most thoughtful answers include some of both.
If you genuinely have to pick one as a starting point: Bitcoin is the simpler, lower-volatility, more conservative entry into crypto. Ethereum is the more complex, higher-beta exposure to the wider industry. Start where your priorities and risk tolerance point you, and add the other over time as you understand it better.
